100-Hour Yoga Teacher Training — A Genuine Foundation

The 100-Hour Yoga Teacher Training at Maa Ganga Yogashala is a focused 11-day residential programme in Tapovan, Rishikesh — designed specifically for those coming to formal yoga study for the first time. Set metres from the Ganga, the programme builds a solid grounding in Yoga, Pranayama, introductory Philosophy, and the fundamentals of meditation without assuming any prior experience.

Many students join the 100-hour course as a first step before continuing to the 200-Hour YTT. Others come purely for personal growth and immersion in yoga's classical roots. Both are equally valid reasons — and both lead to the same Yoga Alliance certificate.

Certificate of Completion

A school-issued certificate recognising 100 hours of residential yoga training — a solid foundation before the RYT-200.

Genuinely Built for Beginners

Zero experience needed. The curriculum starts from first principles — no poses, philosophy, or terminology assumed.

Fully Residential & All-Inclusive

Accommodation, three Sattvic meals daily, herbal tea, course materials, certificate, and weekend excursions — all in the fee.

A Natural Path to the 200-Hour

Students who complete the 100-hour course can continue directly to the 200-hour at Maa Ganga Yogashala with the foundation already built.

This Programme Is for You If…

No prior yoga experience is required — only curiosity and commitment.

First-Time Yoga Students

You've practised yoga casually or not at all, and you want a structured, authentic introduction to yoga as a complete system — not just a fitness class.

200-Hour Aspirants

You plan to do the full 200-hour eventually but want to start with 11 days to build confidence and see if residential yoga study suits you.

Spiritual Seekers

You're drawn to the philosophical and meditative dimensions of yoga — the inner science, not just the physical practice — and want a genuine introduction.

Meaningful Travel

You're travelling through India and want an immersive, purposeful experience in Rishikesh — learning yoga where it originated, not just sightseeing.

Wellness Professionals

You work in fitness, therapy, or healthcare and want to bring foundational yoga knowledge into your practice — without a 22-day commitment yet.

Personal Transformation

You're at a crossroads — looking for clarity, stillness, and a reset through disciplined practice, community, and time in one of the world's most sacred landscapes.

No age restrictions — students from 18 to 65+ have completed the programme successfully.

100-Hour Curriculum

Six integrated modules covering the full spectrum of classical yoga — taught from first principles by resident faculty.

Foundational Yoga from the Shivananda and Satyananda traditions — the physical and energetic base of the entire course.

  • Days 1–4: Pawan Muktasana series (joint and gland exercises), Surya Namaskar — correct alignment, breath coordination, and safe entry and exit from postures.
  • Days 5–8: Standing and seated asana groups — forward bends, backbends, twists, and inversions at the foundational level. Posture-specific modifications and contraindications.
  • Days 9–12: Consolidation, sequencing awareness, and introduction to dynamic and static practice approaches.

Both morning and afternoon practice sessions provide daily reinforcement of alignment principles and safe movement habits.

An introduction to Pranayama as the regulation of Prana — the life-force energy — not merely a breathing exercise.

  • Week 1: The difference between the mechanics of breath and the science of Pranayama; purification techniques — Kapalabhati, Bhastrika, and Anuloma Viloma.
  • Week 2: Nadi Shodhan (alternate-nostril breathing) for purification of the pranic channels; integration with morning asana practice.

All pranayama sessions are supervised. Kumbhaka (breath retention) is introduced gently and only where appropriate for each student.

Philosophy is taught before practice begins — understanding the goal changes the quality of every session that follows.

  • Days 1–4: The six classical Indian philosophical schools (Shat Darshana) — where yoga fits within the broader tradition of Indian thought.
  • Days 5–12: Introduction to Patanjali's Yoga Sutras — the eight limbs of yoga (Ashtanga), the nature of mind (Chitta), and the goal of yoga (Kaivalya). The first two chapters — Samadhi Pada and Sadhana Pada — are covered in accessible, discussion-based sessions.

Sessions are practical and discussion-led — philosophy is connected back to the physical and meditative practice throughout the day.

A foundational understanding of how the body and energy system work — essential for practising and eventually teaching safely.

  • Physical body: The musculoskeletal system — key muscle groups, joints, and their safe range of motion in common yoga postures. Respiratory and nervous system basics.
  • Energy body: Introduction to the Pancha Kosha (five-sheath) model, the seven primary Chakras, and the main Nadis (pranic channels). How asana and pranayama work on the energy body.

The 200-hour programme builds on this with a comprehensive module covering yogic and modern anatomy in full depth.

Six core mantras are learned with correct pronunciation, meaning, and purpose — chanted daily with harmonium accompaniment:

  1. Om (Pranava — the primordial sound)
  2. Ganesh Mantra (removing obstacles)
  3. Food Mantra (gratitude before meals)
  4. Guru Mantra
  5. Teacher–Student Mantra (Guru-Shishya tradition)
  6. Patanjali Mantra

Sanskrit introduction: Origins of the Sanskrit language, the root letters from the Shiva tradition, and the correct Sanskrit names of the asanas taught throughout the course.

Meditation follows the Bihar School of Yoga methodology. Four core practices are introduced across structured evening sessions:

  • Yoga Nidra — conscious deep relaxation and pratyahara (sense withdrawal)
  • Trataka — concentrated gazing to develop one-pointed focus
  • Kaya Sthairyam — stillness of the body as a gateway to stillness of mind
  • Antar Mouna — inner silence; witnessing thoughts without identification

Teaching Basics — in the final three days, students are introduced to the foundations of instruction:

  • The four instructional approaches: verbal cues, observation, demonstration, and assists
  • Basic class structure — warm-up, main sequence, cool-down, and Savasana
  • One observed teaching practice session with faculty feedback

What Our Graduates Say

Students from around the world have completed the 100-hour programme. Here are a few of their stories.

“I had never done a full yoga class before arriving in Rishikesh. I was honestly terrified. By day three the morning practice felt like the most natural part of my day. The teachers here have a patience and clarity that I have never encountered in any classroom. The philosophy sessions gave me a framework I carry into everything now — not just yoga. Twelve days felt short, so I came back the following year for the 200-hour.”

Laura Müller 🇩🇪 Germany · 100-Hour YTT

“I came as a complete beginner and left understanding yoga in a way that years of gym classes and online videos had never given me. The Pranayama sessions alone were worth the trip — I had no idea breath could do what they showed us. The community you build in 11 days of living and practising together is genuinely special. I still keep in touch with my batch. Rishikesh stays with you.”

James Okafor 🇬🇧 United Kingdom · 100-Hour YTT

“I had practised yoga on and off for years but always felt something was missing. The 100-hour course here filled that gap completely — the philosophy, the morning Pranayama, the meditation before dinner. I understood for the first time why yoga is called a complete system and not just a set of postures. The school is modest and genuine, which is exactly what I needed. No performance, no marketing — just real teaching.”

No. The 100-hour programme is specifically designed for beginners and those new to formal yoga study. Everything starts from the ground up — correct posture, safe alignment, basic breath awareness, and foundational philosophy. Students with no yoga background and students who practise casually both complete the course successfully. There are no prerequisites and no age restrictions.

The 100-hour course (11 days) covers Yoga foundations, an introduction to Yoga Philosophy, anatomy essentials, and basic teaching methodology. Graduates receive a Certificate of Completion from Maa Ganga Yogashala. The 200-hour course (22 days) goes significantly deeper — it adds Ashtanga Vinyasa, the full Patanjali Yoga Sutras across all four chapters, a comprehensive anatomy module, advanced pranayama, multiple supervised teaching practice sessions, and the internationally recognised Yoga Alliance RYT-200 credential. Students who complete the 100-hour often continue directly to the 200-hour programme.

Upon successfully completing the 11-day programme — including attendance, teaching practice, and assessments — graduates receive a Certificate of Completion from Maa Ganga Yogashala. This is a school-issued credential recognising the completion of 100 hours of yoga training. It is not a Yoga Alliance registration. If you are looking for an internationally registered credential, the 200-Hour YTT at Maa Ganga Yogashala leads to the Yoga Alliance RYT-200.

The course runs for 11 days. A typical day starts with a 5:00 AM wake-up, herbal tea at 6:00 AM, morning asana practice from 6:30 to 8:00 AM, Pranayama from 8:00 to 8:45 AM, and breakfast from 9:00 to 10:00 AM. Academic sessions (Philosophy, Mantra) run until midday. A lunch and rest break follows from 12:00 to 3:00 PM. The afternoon covers Anatomy or Teaching Basics, then a second Asana session from 4:15 to 5:45 PM, evening Meditation from 6:00 to 7:00 PM, and dinner at 7:30 PM.

The fee covers 12 nights of accommodation (in your chosen room type), three freshly prepared Sattvic vegetarian meals per day, morning and evening herbal tea, all training materials and a course manual, a Certificate of Completion from Maa Ganga Yogashala, and 1 weekend excursion (from: Waterfall visit, Sunrise Kunjapuri, Vashistha Cave, Rafting, or Ganga Aarti Parmarth — based on season and availability). Guests in the Deluxe Private Room also receive a Sound Healing session and an Ayurvedic Body Massage. Not included: international flights, visa fees, travel insurance, personal expenses, and optional adventure activities.

The 100-hour course gives you a solid foundation in Yoga, Philosophy, Pranayama, and the basics of teaching. The Certificate of Completion demonstrates that you have undergone structured residential training. However, Yoga Alliance USA requires a 200-hour minimum for RYT (Registered Yoga Teacher) status. If your goal is to teach professionally with an internationally recognised credential, the 200-hour YTT at Maa Ganga Yogashala is the direct path. Many students complete the 100-hour first and then continue.

Yes, and most students arrive solo. The residential format means you live, eat, and practise together with a small international group — friendships form naturally and quickly. Our team assists with airport pickup, local orientation, and any questions before and during the course. Rishikesh is one of the safest destinations in India for solo travellers.
